Social Relations and Leisure Activities as Predictors of Wellbeing Among Older Adults with Multiple Sclerosis

Published on Tue, 1 Sep 1903

Background:

As more people with MS age, there’s a need for rehabilitation specifically for older adults to support their wellbeing despite impairments. However, most research has focused on the physical and psychological aspects, neglecting the social aspects and their impact on overall wellbeing.

Study:

THIS STUDY aims to investigate how social relationships and leisure activities influence the wellbeing of older adults with MS in Denmark. It also seeks to identify the key sociodemographic and health factors that affect their ability to participate in leisure activities and maintain various social connections.

Results:

The study found that older adults with MS feel better when they have emotional and practical support. Positive relationships, especially with friends, coworkers, or neighbors, greatly improve their wellbeing. Engaging in social, physical, and creative leisure activities also boosts their sense of wellbeing. These factors combined play a crucial role in determining the overall wellbeing of older adults with MS.

Why This Matters to You?

The study’s findings suggest that rehabilitation for older adults with MS should address physical, psychological, and social aspects of daily life. Future rehabilitation programs should also consider sociodemographic factors like living arrangements, mobility, age, and gender, as these influence participation in leisure activities and social connections.
